Well, it’s official, ladies and gentlemen. Konami and Metal Gear have officially jumped the shark, and have unveiled at Gamescom this year Resident Gear Of Duty 6 (Or Metal Gear Survive).
Set directly after the events of Ground Zeroes, the survivors of the Militaires Sans Frontières are pulled (and I’m not even joking here) through a wormhole, to an alternate dimension where they are forced to battle zombies and from what we can tell in the trailer, some form of Metal Gear (or possibly a dinosaur, we really don’t know where they’re going with this).
In a press release, the European President of Konami Tomotada Tashiro has said
“Metal Gear Survive will offer a fresh take on the series’ famed stealth elements, but within a unique co-op setting that is designed for a truly engrossing multiplayer experience.”
We were interested to see what direction the series may take after the somewhat contentious departure of famed producer and series creator Hideo Kojima, and we’re still a little baffled at the one they have chosen. We’ll be waiting to give a full verdict after seeing a little more than the sneak peak but we do know that we’ll be getting a four player co-op experience and all new weapons and enemies.
With the enemies that we’ve seen (Konami refer to them as “Biological Threats”) being pretty much crystalline forms of The Last Of Us undead, it’s certainly a new take on the franchise. The game will still be powered by the FOX engine, and while we did see some memorable characters during the start of the introduction, it’s not clear if they will be appearing within your core gameplay
Metal Gear Survive is set to launch on Xbox One, PS4, and PC in 2017
